1864 Letter St Helena SC Teacher Slaves Deserters Arrested This is a great 4 page handwritten letter from St Helena Island, South Carolina from 1864. It was written by Catherine Noyes, who was a teacher to the freed slaves at the time and has great content throughout. It says in part: The poor darkeys are very much frightened because some soldiers are about arresting deserters, not only the deserters are frightened but those who have never been near the army. I rather think a good many from this place slept in the woods last night, they are so afraid of being caught… I had no idea Washington was so dirty and shiftless. Aren’t the darkeys comical, they almost kill me. I suppose those you see are more civilized than ours and consequently not so entertaining… WE have had a lovely school today the children I presume were made good natured by their Christmas presents at any rate they behaved like dark complexioned angels. When I first came here I could not bear to touch them but now I take hold of them and move them round and make them stand straight just as if they were white… Check out my other items !
