1864 Letter Noyes Slave Teacher South Carolina Accident Wreck Wife of William Francis Allen Mary Lambert This is a letter from Catherine Porter Noyes to her family from South Carolina where she was working with the freed slaves to Boston. Katy was a teacher for the freed slaves on St Helena Island in South Carolina during the Civil War. We sold most of this collection earlier this year but have just found these letters. The letter is half written by her and the other half is written by Mary Lambert Allen, the wife of William Francis Allen who were both working alongside of Noyes in South Carolina. William was an author and educator and wrote an important work on songs of the slaves. It is handwritten and is 4 pages long. It says in part: I intended to have gone home in the steamer that sailed last Saturday for after I heard of your dangerous sickness I felt that I did not stay here a moment longer. I had my trunk all packed and was on the way to the boat when the horse took flight and ran and I jumped out and hurt myself…All this week I have been hoping to go in the one that sails day after tomorrow but M and I have finally decided that I can hardly take it for another week…with all love your Katy… She (Katy) is unwell today…in addition to her general lameness and bruises leave her in a poor condition to travel.
