1863 Letter Vicksburg Battle 27 th Wisconsin Infantry Captain Killed This is a great 3 page handwritten letter from June 25, 1863 from William F Rounsvell of the 27 th Wisconsin Infantry. He was stationed at Johnsons Landing at Vicksburg. It says, “The nearest we have been to them is to exchange a few shots with pickets. The Rebs planted a small battery about ¾ of a mile from us and fired a few shots at one of our transports, but a little gunboat lying nearby soon put an end to their sport. It is astonishing to see how correct our gunners shoot. While we were on the march from Setacia here this company met with a great loss. Our Captain was accidentally shot and died in about 36 hours, it was like losing a father. We were obliged to leave him at a plantation with one man with him. The Capt was buried and the man we left with him was taken prisoner he has not been heard from since. Yesterday morning an official report was received here that Pt Hudson was taken. Cheers for General Banks and his army. Vicksburg has not fallen yet, but it is thought it will soon. There has been cannonading there since about the 1 st of May. We can hear it from here. Some morning they will commence at about 1 o’clock and it will be continual war until about 10 o’clock. Then they slacken a little on account of the heat. We are in a miserable unhealthy read more
