1862 Letter Attack Knights Golden Circle Mattoon Illinois Noyes This is a wonderful 4 page letter from 1861 from Catherine Noyes, a young woman who went to teach freed slaves towards the end of the Civil War. It was written while she was in Mattoon, Illinois and has great content throughout. It says in part, There is a report here today that Charleston is taken. It seems almost too good to be true but we cannot but hope that it is and wait anxiously for further news. We read also today of a battle in Kentucky and we want very much to know whether Joe’s Regiment was engaged in it. If this war could only be finished this winter how happy happy I should be… Check out my other items !
