Tobacco Carpets
Tobacco Carpets - Description
Tobacco carpets or rugs are small textile premiums tobacco manufacturers inserted in their products in the early 1900s to advertise their brands and attract customers. They were made of felt or silk and were also known as dollhouse rugs. Tobacco carpets were produced in many themes, including college pennants and world flags. They were collected and used to make various sewing crafts, such as quilts. The insertion of carpets ended around 1916 when redeemable coupons replaced them and other tobacco novelties.
Tobacco Carpets - History
Tobacco manufacturers began inserting a variety of promotional premiums into their packaging around 1870. They started offering colorful textiles as premiums around 1905, including cigar ribbons, cigarette silks, tobacco flannels, and carpets. These textile gifts were hugely popular with consumers. They were collected by thousands of people, especially women, who used them for sewing projects, such as bedspreads, pillows, and quilts. They were also popular with children who used them in dollhouses.
Tobacco carpets featured various themes and styles, including collegiate athletics, nursery rhymes, Oriental and Persian patterns, and soldiers.
Some carpets resembled their life-sized counterparts, with colorful piled yarns and fringed trimming on two sides. On the other hand, some were velveteen with the design printed onto the pile. Some carpets also related to the brand of cigarettes or tobacco they promoted. For instance, Turkish tobacco manufacturers produced carpets with designs of genuine Turkish rugs.
The insertion of tobacco carpets and other textile novelties ended around 1916 when they were replaced by coupons that consumers could redeem for a broader range of products, including appliances and clothing.

Tobacco Carpets - Identification & Value
Tobacco carpets, also known as dollhouse rugs, are made from felt or silk and come in various sizes. Most are approximately two to four inches wide and between four and seven inches long, but smaller and larger examples exist.
These novelty carpets can be identified by their colorful designs and patterns that mimic authentic rugs from well-known textile hubs like Persia and Turkey. Some carpets also have the same construction as their larger counterparts.
Tobacco carpets were produced with various themes and styles, including animals, collegiate sports, university pennants and seals, and world flags.
Tobacco carpets are often confused with tobacco flannels because of their similar sizes and themes. Generally, carpets can be differentiated by their two fringed sides, whereas flannels typically have no fringe. However, collectors should be aware that some tobacco carpets, such as Native American and Oriental rugs, were also made without fringe.

Tobacco Carpets - Symbols
Manufacturers generally packaged tobacco carpets in paper envelopes featuring company-specific information. For example, those from P. Lorillard had the company's name and location. However, because carpets rarely still have their original paper envelopes, collectors can instead authenticate them using a thorough and trustworthy provenance.
Some other manufacturers, including the American Tobacco Company, printed the name of their cigarette brand, such as Egyptienne Straights Cigarettes, on the back of carpets.
